Carson High School’s chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and marketing students launched a new student-produced business magazine, “Entrepreneurs in Action,” with a special event held last Thursday at the Brewery Arts Center. The launch party marked the culmination of months of hard work, creativity and collaboration from FBLA and marketing students, who took the magazine from concept to publication.
Since late January, FBLA and business and marketing students have applied hands-on learning in marketing, sales, interview techniques, journalism, graphic design and business management for the new magazine, which highlights the achievements, challenges and vision of local entrepreneurs.
The magazine was a collaboration between the students; Mr. Cody Downing, Carson High business and marketing teacher and FBLA co-advisor; Ms. Angila Golik, Carson High social studies teacher and FBLA co-advisor; Ms. Jenny Treece, ad director for Carson Now and Mr. Jon Rogers, a retired entrepreneur.
During the launch party, Mr. Kirk Caraway, publisher of Carson Now, announced as part of the process, Carson Now was donating $36,510 to the students and the school’s program to reinvest in the magazine initiative and help ensure it will become an annual publication. He said the students at Carson High generated more than $53,000 in advertising sales. The figure donated represents the profit amount of the project after expenses.
Shortly after Caraway’s announcement, Mr. Don Kuhl, one of the entrepreneurs highlighted in the magazine, stood up, (so moved and inspired) and said he would match Carson Now’s donation with a personal investment of $36,510. In total, $73,020 was reinvested in the students at Carson High.
Money raised from the magazine project will fund scholarships, leadership programs and student-led business initiatives, empowering Carson City’s next generation of entrepreneurial talent.
Hard copies of the 64-page, professionally-designed business magazine will be available, free of cost, at various businesses and community organizations throughout Carson City. To view the entire magazine digitally, please visit the Carson High website or click here.
